A wonderful location just above the valley of Aibl guarantees grapes form very special quality here.
The vineyard with its south-west view is 450 meters above the sea level. It is said that already in 1314 people planted wine here – back then owned by the monastery of Mahrnberg. Around 1653 the wines were sold by Lord Otto of Schrattenbach to the working people. That around the rise of the iron production. In 1865 a glass house had been built in Aibl which created a new distribution channel for the wine of the Aibl hill. Around 1900 the first records of the Wining school Silberberg happened. The Silberbergers had a base for experimental purposes and wine branch increase on that ground. The well-known perfect location guarantees a stable thermic and therefore a fast dry process of the leaves and grapes after the rain. The sandy soil is an ideal head storage through the night.
After the land happen to have 5 different owners over the past 90 years, I managed to buy the land in 1990. Some corrections had to happen to start the planting process. Back that it was clear to me: I am going to be a vintner. In 1991 I planted 2ha Blue Wilbacher. Severe setbacks, hail in 1993, an accident which luckily was harmless for me but completely destroyed my tractor and a landslide in 2005 could not stop me from farming this wonderful land. The result are extravagant wines. The first Blue Wildbacher Barrique 1995, Spätlese 1997, the best Styrian red wine 1999, Schilcher Ice wine 2003 and last but not least every year our Schilcher Ried Aibl are the outcomes!
